This Privacy Policy explains how Instruc (“we”, “our”, “us”) collects, uses, and shares information about users of our Google Chrome extension. A Privacy Policy should clearly state what data is collected, how it is used, and with whom it is shared . Instruc helps users by showing interactive guides that highlight elements on a product’s interface based on previously recorded tutorial flows. We currently serve customers in the United States and comply with relevant U.S. laws (such as the California Consumer Privacy Act). By using our extension, you agree to the terms described here.
Information We Collect
Instruc follows a data minimization approach: we only collect information that is necessary for the extension to function . When you create an account to use Instruc, we collect basic account information (such as your name, email address, or other contact details you provide) to authenticate you and manage your account. We also store the tutorial data (specifically the identifiers of DOM elements that a product specialist clicked during recording) so that the guide can highlight those elements for end users. We do not collect cookies, local storage data, browsing history, or other personal browsing information from your browser. In fact, because Instruc does not scrape or log general web content, our Privacy Policy explicitly notes that we do not handle personal or sensitive data beyond required account details .
Account Data: When you register, we collect your account credentials and contact information. Personal information (e.g. name, email) is defined by law as data that identifies you . We limit collection to what is needed for account setup.
Tutorial Data: We collect the DOM element identifiers (IDs, classes, etc.) recorded by a product specialist when creating a guide. This information is tied to the product interface and does not include any personal user data such as your IP address or browsing history.
No Tracking Data: We do not use cookies, web beacons, or similar tracking technologies. The plugin’s functionality relies solely on the Chrome Extension APIs, not on cookies or local storage, so no tracking or marketing data is collected from your browser.
How We Use Information
We use the information we collect only to provide and improve our service. For example, we use your account information to authenticate you and communicate updates or support messages. We use the recorded tutorial data to generate and display the interactive guides on your screen when you access a shared Instruc link. We may also use aggregated or anonymized usage metrics (for example, to measure how often guides are used) to improve the extension’s performance. We do not use your personal information for advertising, nor do we create marketing profiles. In other words, we only use data that a typical user would reasonably expect for the functionality of the extension .
Provide the interactive guidance you request by retrieving and displaying the recorded DOM elements.
Manage and secure your account, including sending you important service-related notices.
Improve our service by analyzing non-personal, aggregated data about usage patterns.
No unrelated use: We will not use your data for purposes other than those described above.
Third-Party Services
Instruc uses third-party cloud storage and service providers to operate. For example, we host tutorial and account data on secure cloud servers (such as Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud). These providers implement industry-standard security (including encryption in transit and at rest) to protect your data. As required by Google’s policies, we encrypt all data transfers (using HTTPS/TLS) when personal or sensitive information is involved . We also use third-party services for tasks like email delivery (to send account confirmations or notifications). Any such provider only processes your data to perform the service (they do not use your data for their own purposes).
Cloud Storage: Your data (account details and tutorial flows) are stored on third-party cloud servers under our account. We ensure they use secure encryption and access controls.
Email Services: If we send emails (for account verification, password reset, etc.), we use a trusted email service provider.
Other Service Providers: We may use analytics tools or customer support services to the extent needed to improve the extension. These tools process information on our behalf and under our control.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. As one example privacy policy states: “We do not sell your information to any third parties… We may share data with third-party service providers for analytics, payment processing, or legal requirements” . Similarly, we may disclose information only to comply with legal obligations (such as a court order) or to protect our rights.
Cookies and Tracking
We do not use cookies or other tracking technologies. The Instruc extension does not place cookies on your browser, nor do we use localStorage to collect data. Our functionality relies entirely on Chrome’s extension APIs to capture and display tutorial flows. In short, there is no cookie-based or persistent tracking of your browsing through Instruc.
Data Sharing and Disclosure
We never sell or share your personal data for marketing purposes. We may share your information only in the limited ways described above (with our service providers or as required by law). For example, if you request a feature or report an issue, we may share diagnostic data with our analytics provider to help resolve it. But otherwise, your data stays under our control. Specifically, we comply with U.S. privacy laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act: California law gives consumers the right to know, correct, or delete their personal information collected by a business . We honor these rights and will disclose the personal data we have upon request.
Data Security
We follow strict security practices to protect your information. All data transmitted between your browser and our servers is encrypted over HTTPS (per Google’s secure handling requirements ). We also store data securely and restrict access to authorized personnel. While no system is completely foolproof, we strive to maintain industry-standard safeguards to prevent unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction of your data.
Your Rights
You have control over your information. You can review, update, or delete your account information at any time by contacting us or through your account settings (if available). Under the California Consumer Privacy Act and similar laws, you have rights including the right to access and delete personal information we have collected . In practice, since Instruc collects minimal personal data (basically your contact info for your account), exercising these rights is straightforward. For example, if you delete your account, we will remove your data from our servers, subject to any legal retention requirements.
Access/Correction: You can request to see or correct the personal data we hold about you.
Deletion: You can request that we delete your personal data (for example, by closing your account).
Opt-Out: If applicable, you can opt out of any secondary uses of your data; however, we do not sell data or use it for advertising.
Children’s Privacy
Instruc is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from minors. If we learn that we have inadvertently collected personal data from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete it as soon as possible. Parents or guardians may contact us to request deletion of a child’s information.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When changes are made, we will revise the “Last Updated” date and notify users as appropriate. Continued use of the extension after changes indicates your acceptance of the new terms. We will not reduce your rights under this policy without your explicit consent.
